Johan de Kock

Johannes Marthinus de Kock was born on 8 January 1929 in De Doorns, South Africa. He studied at Stellenbosch University and lectured at the Universities of Potchefstroom (1952-1954) and Stellenbosch(1956-1992). His field of interest is Comparative Anatomy and Embriology of vertebrates.The promotor for his M.Sc. was the renowned Zoologist C.G.S. de Villiers and the promotor for his Doctor's Degree was D.v.Z. Engelbrecht.
His Masters Degree in Zoology (The cranial morphology of Sturnus v. vulgaris L.) was published in the Annals of Stellenbosch University, 31A:153-177 (1955).
His Ph.D. The Development of the Chondocranium of Melopsittacus Undulatus was published by Springer Verlag Berlin Heidelberg (1987).

Johan is a respected potter and a prize winning member of the Pottery Society of South Africa. He took part in two exhibitions at the Association of Potters of Southern Africa, Western Cape Region in 1996 and 1997 (Silver Jubilee) where his work was highly commended. He also exhibited at Ironic Gallery in Cape Town in 2003.
All his work is hand built. Its strong feature is the arrangement of coloured clay in geometrical patterns.
He loves classical music and literature and for twenty five years played an important role in the Stellenbosch Eisteddfod - for more than ten years as committee chairman.

Johan is married to Cornelia, daughter of Joggie Spies. They have three children: Johan, Corlie and Annemarie.
