Professor for Classical Languages at University of Cape Town, 1969 - 1975

André Malan Hugo was born on 13 June 1929, at Worcester, where he matriculated in 1945, excelling at Latin and History. He studied Classical languages at Stellenbosch University (BA 1948, MA 1950, both cum laude). With a Currie Scholarship he continued his studies at the University of Utrecht, where he also read Classical Archaeology. He passed his doctoral examination, cum laude, in 1954 and gained another doctorate, cum laude, in 1957.
He was appointed lecturer in Latin, 1957 and senior lecturer, 1961, at Stellenbosch University. In July 1969 he became professor of Classics (Greek and Latin) at the University of Cape Town.
In 1957, André Hugo was married to Catherina Johanna (Hanneke) Moll, the daughter of an advocate in Utrecht. They had 3 sons and a daughter, Herman, Daniël, Anton and Nelleke. A descendant of the French Huguenots of 1688, André Hugo spent time in France doing research into the background of many Huguenot families. He was very interested and knowledgeable in history and devoted his energies to the preservation of old houses and antiques. He wrote many articles on the history of Stellenbosch and was a founding member of the Genealogical Society, a member of the Simon van der Stel Foundation, the Huguenot Society of South Africa and a council member of the Van Riebeeck Society.
André Malan Hugo died on 24 January 1975, at Cape Town and was buried at Non Pareille, Dal Josaphat.
