Daniël Johannes Louw was born in 1944.
After completion of his theological training, Daniël Louw furthered his studies in Philosophy at the University of Tübingen, Germany, on the principle of hope (E Bloch) and theology of hope (J Moltmann). He served as minister at Wynberg and Stellenberg and, since 1978, was a lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch. He was responsible for Practical Theology, Pastoral Theology and Pastoral Counselling. Pastoral Care focuses on chaplaincy, terminal care, marriage and family enrichment, as well as on social issues, such as poverty and Aids. After his retirement he continued to co-operate in these fields.

Other activities:
Project Leader: of a HIV/AIDS theological research program in Africa in co-operation with the African Network for Higher Education and Research in Theology and HIV in conjunction with the M. Th. in Clinical Pastoral Care/Stellenbosch, the Ethiopian Graduate School of Theology in Addis Ababa, Makumira University College, Tansania, Natal University, All African Counsel of Churches, Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and Faculty of Theology Uppsala Sweden. The agreement with Upssala is the outcome of deliberations and discussions held by Prof Louw in 2004 with theologians in Uppsala Sweden.
Member of International Council on Pastoral Care and Counselling (Vice President 2007-2011 and President since 2011)

Daniël Louw is married to Hermien and they have two daughters and two sons.
