Fanie Olivier

Poet, author, translator and compiler of poetry collections
Professor of Afrikaans and South African Studies at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland

Stephanus Petrus Olivier was born in Pretoria on June 23, 1949. He matriculated from Port Natal Hoërskool in Durban and studied Stellenbosch University (BA in Law, MA in Afrikaans), where he took part in D. J. Opperman 's Letterkundige Laboratorium.
He obtained a Litt Drs in Literary Theory at the University of Utrecht and a D Litt at the University of Potchefstroom (under the supervision of T T Cloete. Thesis: Die mistiek in die Afrikaanse poësie). He also has a LLB degree from Unisa and has been admitted and practices as an advocate in the High Court of South Africa.
Fanie Olivier taught at Union High School in Graaff-Reinet, Ridgeway College in Louis Trichardt, and was attached to the Afrikaans Departments [and Dutch, where applicable] at the Universities of Natal, Durban-Westville and Venda, from where he retired in June 2004. He was Professor in Afrikaans and South African Studies in the School of English of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland, was Arts Editor of the Sunday newspaper Rapport and is a regular reviewer of new books.
Fanie was married to Rike (she died in 2007), also an academic and writer, and has a son and two daughters from earlier marriages.
