Author of publications on the history of music

Director of the Conservatoire and Chairman of the Music Department, Stellenbosch University, until 1998

Reino Ernst Ottermann was born on 26 July 1936 in Rustenburg and grew up in the German community of Kroondal, near Rustenburg. He studied in Stellenbosch (BA, BMus, MMus and D Phil), Frankfurt am Main and Berlin.
From 1961 he taught at the University of Stellenbosch where he became professor in 1978. He was director of the conservatoire and chairman of the music department from 1988 until his retirement in 1998.
Apart from his main field of interest, musicology, he has also been active in the field of church music, especially hymnology, and in general cultural history, having had a number of articles, as well as contributions to encyclopedias, published in each of them. Furthermore, he was involved in the compilation and publication of Lutheran hymnals and liturgical books in Afrikaans, English and German, as well as in African languages.

Reino Ottermann is married to Rosa Jauss who was lecturer in Home Economics at Stellenbosch University for many years. They have four children: Manfred (Manager: Product Projects, DaimlerChrysler, East London), Annegret (fashion buyer, Parow), Birgit (singer) and Peter (computer software engineer, Rondebosch).
