Founding member and chairman of the first South African Drama Society
Author of a Dictionary and contributor to the Suid-Afrikaanse Biografiese Woordeboek
Professor of German at the University of Stellenbosch, 1954-1968

Georg Paul Johannes Trümpelmann was born on 7 July 1903. He studied at UNISA (BA) and obtained two Doctorates (at the universities of Leipzig, Germany, and Pretoria).
He lectured in German at the University of Natal-Pietermaritzburg (1935), the University of the Orange Free State (1944) and the University of Pretoria (1949).
He was professor of German at Stellenbosch University from 1954 until his retirement in 1968 and afterwards served for three years as head of the German Department at the University of the Western Cape.
In 1967, although in the German Department of Stellenbosch University, was also made supervising head of the Drama Department until the appointment of the new head.
Memberships:
In 1931 he founded the first Afrikaans theatrical society in South-West Africa. He was the first chairman of the Bloemfonteinse Teatergroep from 1946-1948.

Member of the management board of the Afrikaans Touring Company (NTO), 1961
1965-71: Board member the drama committee of CAPAB (Kruik - Kaapse Raad vir Uitvoerende KunsteCapab)

Hans Trümpelmann was married to Augusta Rothraut, neé Holm. They had two children: Brigitte and Volker.
He died on 1 June 1982.

Awards:

Honorary Member Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns for his studies on the history of South West Africa and German literature in South Africa.
First South African to receive the International Goethe Medal from the German Government.
