U. M. Gerryts was born on 9 October 1907 in Noordhoek.
He matriculated at the Hoër Jongenskool Stellenbosch (Paul Roos Gymnasium).
He studied at the Universities of Stellenbosch (B.A and S.O.D.) and Potchefstroom (M.A.) to become a teacher.

After his retirement as a lecturer he lived as a farmer and writer.
