Willem Daniel François Malherbe was born on 1 February 1930 in Stellenbosch.
His parents were Marié and F. E. J. Malherbe, Professor of Afrikaans at Stellenbosch University.
Fana attended the Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch.
He studied at the Universities of Cape Town (MBCh.B) and Amsterdam (MD)
and trained as Plastic Surgeon in Holland and England.
He was in private practice as plastic surgeon in Cape Town for 40 years until
his retirement in February 2000.
During his years of training in England, he took art classes and later a
course in sculpture at the Cape Technicon. In 2000 he attended the Slade Art
School at the University College of London for an advanced course in sculpture.
He no longer reconstructs living tissue but is now a full time sculptor in
stone and clay, the human body still being his main interest. His work can be
found in private collections throughout South Africa as well as many public
collections including a bust of C. Louis Leipoldt, in the foyer of the Louis
Leipoldt Hospital in Bellville and a bust of Prof. Mike de Vries in the Sasol
Art Gallery in Stellenbosch.
Fana Malherbe is married to Wilma Malherbe.
They have four daughters.
